AFTER THE CURTAIN CALL, Assemblyman Luis A. Alejo (D-Salinas) presented the cast and crew of MAGNO RUBIO with a copy of ACR 74, otherwise known as the Filipino American Resolution. In photo are Associate Producers REX SAMPAGA and ED RAMOLETE, Assemblyman ALEJO, TED BENITO (Producer) and BERNARDO BERNARDO (Director/Translator). ACR 74 marks the first time California has expressly apologized to Filipino Americans for the violations of their civil liberties and constitutional rights for nearly 100 years.

The staging of MAGNO RUBIO at Inside the Ford Theatre capped the celebration of Filipino American Heritage month. Lonnie Carter’s THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO, based on Carlos Bulosan’s short story, essays the challenges faced by the early Filipino migrant workers in California during the 1930s.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING about
The Romance of Magno Rubio @Inside the Ford Theatre:

DAVID C. NICHOLS, Critic’s Choice, LA Times:

"Pure theatricality enlivens The Romance of Magno Rubio at [Inside] the Ford. This arresting take on Carlos Bulosan’s celebrated short story about a migrant Filipino farm worker in Depression-era California conveys inspired kinetic craft."

NEAL WEAVER, Backstage:

"Director Bernardo Bernardo gives the play a high-voltage production, enlivening Carter’s rhymed text with music, robust physical action, dance, and martial arts. The cast performs with infectious enthusiasm."

MeyankKeshaviah, "GO" LA Weekly:

"The entire ensemble is fantastic, their movements crisp and energetic, their expressions full of vivacity and their vocals beautifully harmonic. The show, at its core, has the bawdy, wonderful, put-it-all-out-there-ness of a well-done Shakespeare play."

MARVIN VASQUEZ, Campus Circle:

"With pure honesty, I must admit and declare myself a true lover of The Romance of Magno Rubio. This play is an unforgettable tale of romance, love, survival and pursuit of the so-called American Dream. A production filled with articulate thrills, distinct laughs, and prolific musical segments that rhyme, The Romance of Magno Rubio is the must-see play of the season."

PROSY DE LA CRUZ,Asian Journal:

"This well-crafted, multi-textured and multi-layered play illustrated the lyrical nature of our language: Tagalog, with its cascading musicality of tone and words. It also showcased the robust creativity and play of imagination that Filipinos have. They saw nature as extensions of themselves and used it as a form of expression, until they were later silenced and abruptly constrained by the raw displays of racism, exclusion and depraved working conditions—the dis-embodied American dream. Metaphorically, as the romance of Clarabelle by Magno Rubio."

OBED MEDINA, Edge Los Angeles:

“Told partly in rhymed couplets and incorporating traditional Filipino art forms, such as the use of the rattan sticks used by Eskrima, the martial arts of the Philippines, The Romance of Magno Rubio is epic storytelling that casts a magical spell on the audience.”

KCRW Listen:

"But the reason to go see The Romance of Magno Rubio isn’t a passion for diversity. In fact, that’s rarely enough to make good art. It’s the remarkably touching and human performance given by Jon JonBriones as Magno Rubio."

Hey Melpomene, Blog:

"This is a fun and entertaining show; the play is broken up periodically by farm workers serving as chorus and comedy relief, segments of the show are spoken in Tagalog and there are some amusingly inventive dance and fight sequences. One of the show’s stand-out moments comes during a slow-motion fistfight between Claro and Magno."

JOE STRAW #9:

"The Romance of Magno Rubio by Lonnie Carter and directed by Bernardo Bernardo at the Ford Theatre is absolutely wonderful! In all my many years in theatre I have not seen anything like this. It is a terrific show from the moment the actors appear on stage to the moment they leave. This show is magnificent and inspiring! It will also break your heart. Run to see this production!"

BARNABY HUGHES, Stage and Cinema:

"These guys have worked hard together and it shows. Jon JonBriones, despite his small stature, has enormous stage presence and easily carries the show. His portrayal of Magno Rubio is big-hearted and endearing. A story that celebrates the indomitable spirit of the earliest Pinoys in California, The Romance of Magno Rubio reminds us that they are still with us today and in greater numbers than ever before."

Lead Actor JONJON BRIONES (Magno), Assemblyman LUIS ALEJO, and Stage Director BERNARDO BERNARDO pose for a commemorative photo in front of the sign "NO DOGS AND FILIPINOS ALLOWED" which was prominently displayed all over the West Coast during the darker times of Depression Era America of the 1930′s. The Watsonville Riots was one of the more infamous anti-Filipino demonstrations of the time. One of the little ironies of contemporary history–the fact that the genteleman responsible for ACR 74 (Assemblyman Alejo) hails from Watsonville–is not lost on the trio as they strike a pose for MAGNO RUBIO and the multitude of Manongs he represents.

REVIEWS FOR BB’s OTHER SHOWS

"Director Peter DuBois (Artistic Producer of New York’s Joseph Papp PUBLIC THEATER and director of THE LONG SEASON) wrote: ‘(Bernardo’s)…virtuosity is astonishing… interpret(s) a song with such soul, such emotional intelligence and with the kind of command that directors dream of.’"

-Ricky Lo
PHILIPPINE STAR

"I had the opportunity to watch actor-comedian Bernardo Bernardo in PROMISES, PROMISES at OnStage, Greenbelt… It was just a small role but the audience marveled at his effortless acting on stage, even eclipsing the major characters in the play. As Dr. Dreyfuss, he was vibrant, charming, and interesting; an ever-disciplined performer.

"This acting discipline he has imbued in his persona is carried not only on stage but on television and the movies as well… (as shown) in a major role in a Japanese film shot entirely in the Philippines by writer-director Hideki Yamasaki (CHATEAU DE ROSES)… His performance in his scenes brought on applause from his co-stars as well as the entire crew, including the director of photography, Marissa Floreindo."

THE CAST AND CREW OF THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO were overwhelmed yet grateful for the standing ovations and rave reviews heaped upon the production. It was always the Bernardo’s contention that the play was much bigger than any single member of the production–and that the production’s goal was mainly to pay tribute to the Manongs; and, perhaps, add a little more light
upon the trail the Manongs have blazed for those who would follow.

Bernardo directed the Tagalog and English versions of THE ROMANCE OF MAGNO RUBIO
that opened the winter season of Inside the Ford Theatre in Hollywood.

Photo shows Nick (GIOVANNI ORTEGA)reading and translating to Magno (JONJON BRIONES)
the increasingly coarse and demanding "love letters" from Clarabelle (ELIZABETH RAINEY)
to the delight of the kibitzing Chorus (ANTOINE REYNALDO DIEL & ERICK ESTEBAN).

The Cast of ANG ROMANSA NI MAGNO RUBIO also featured Muni Zano,Frederick Edwards,
EymardCabling,Gelo Francisco, Joseph Gelito, and Jet Montelibano.
Lonnie Carter’s original play in English was translated and directed by
Bernardo Bernardo, with choreography by Peter de Guzman, musical direction by Gelo Francisco,
and stage management by Jaclyn Kalkurst. Ted Benito, Ed Ramolete, Lorely Trinidad,
and Paul Policarpio co-produce. Presented by PAE Live! and Good Shepherd Ambulance Company.
